The Royalist Flag

The Royalist Flag

IMO

This flag was constructed in secret by some of the Italian Prisoners of War.  The crown in the flag indicated that it was considered a "Royalist" flag and was supported by members of the POW encampment that were loyal to the King, and not to Mussolini.

When the flag was discovered, Colonel John L. Gammell, Internment Camp Commander, had it confisticated to avoid trouble between the two factions in the camp.

Col. Gammell gave the flag to a resident of Edinburg.  In 2001, it was loaned to the Camp Atterbury Museum.  The owner plans to either donate the flag to the museum, or to the Johnson County Historical Society.
